They complained. They whined. They borrowed money and never paid me back. Was I really supposed to see an image of Christ in these guys?

Seeing Christ in people we find difficult is hard. Any suggestions?

Yes, you did encounter the Scourged Christ...and He blessed you by giving you the opportunity to recognize Him....I think ALOT of us encounter Him and never realize it...and that is sad....We live lives that are crushed full with minutiae, and we think THAT is life...and it's not, but we don't get that....He walks by over and over-- He smiles, He looks pained, He looks pre-occupied, and He even flies by on a bicycle dodging cars in traffic...and we don't get that He is there...That is what could change our society...taking notice...praying to ease the situation of those who are Him...on our streets and in our lives...

Godspy, this is the most beautiful thing I have read in a long, long while. It touched my heart so deeply I had to share it straight away with someone. What a remarkable story. "God reveals to the humble what he hides from the proud." Like St Francis of Assisi kissing the leper, so too you were blessed with a great grace to see Christ in that poor man. God bless you always!

Thank you for this surprising and moving story; I have had some similar experiences at St. Clare's (now called St. Vincent's Midtown) in Hell's Kitchen in NYC.
