What was the movie The Truman Show all about? Was it pro-God or anti-God? Is Truman a saint or a sinner? Is Christof Satan or God? Erasmus and Luther debate the question.

Luther vs. Erasmus. Whose side are you on? Who won the argument?

Excellent article! The dialogue format is ingenious and entertaining. My commendations.

A big problem with Luther's view is the Truman's loveless marriage. The actress playing his wife shows clear signs of the psychological stress caused by selling one's most intimate self (for lucre). So, it is not only the "rebellious" Truman who is unhappy in what Luther claims is paradise, but also his "obedient" wife.

(The larger problem with Luther's theology is that he fails to recall the saying of the Church Fathers, "God became Man so that man could become God." The liberation of Christ is true freedom, not merely the ability to be more easily manipulated by our Creator.)

Another point (observed by many) is name of the boat that carries Truman to freedom (and love): Santa Maria. Surely Luther has enough veneration for the Virgin to note the significance of this detail against his point.

BTW for what it's worth, Christopher West agrees (strongly, as he does everything) with Erasmus's interpretation. His lecture "Sex and the Modern Christian" given at Villa Nova is available on 2 CDs from Our Father's Will Communications.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,

metameta
