When Rod Dreher wrote an article for National Review confessing to being a Birkenstock wearing, countercultural conservative, hundreds of emails and letters of support came pouring in. Now hes published Crunchy Consa manifesto that celebrates faith, family, community and nature against the forces of greed and lust. We spoke to him recently about his book, and why conservatism needs an overhaul.

This is great stuff. It is very exciting, I thought that I was alone with this view. I would carefully mention it in front of my conservative friends. If the reaction was mild, only then I felt free to discuss my anti-corporate, organic food eating green streak. Yes, I own burks, support small farms, and feel more comfortable lunching with lefties than righties since we talk mostly about food. It's good to know that you are not alone.

Where have you been? I've been eating food and growing it responsibly for 70 years. My family is very respectful of the environment; we keep a light foot on the planet. When I visit my daughter and granddaughter in Brooklyn I go to Staubitz. Brooklyn is a great place to deal with human size stores, high quality fish etc. Did you ever go to the neighborhood book store not far from Staubitz? And the neighborhoods truly are complete with parks. My point is, though, being a Republican is not so important. None of the people I know who are crunchy cons are Republicans. I was for years but unenrolled with Reagan and Bush. And as I dealt with mainline churches (after a childhood in a Unitarian church) I saw too much "I know it all" and non Christ like behavior so that now I have totally withdrawn and am "none of the above" when asked about religion. But I have a strong belief and faith in God. We all maintain a simple lifestyle, take part in coop buying, live frugally.
I'm glad you wrote the book - maybe more will join in the fun and learn to get along.

After reading your plan for decent living on the planet I wondered how my life of frugality, eating green and healthy, growing my own, enjoying life with my vegetarian daughter in Brooklyn Heights, visiting Stubitz and enjoying their excellent meat, (have you been to the Community bookstore?) which all started back in the 1930's without benefit of home schooling, eventually unenrolling from the Republican party, and being driven out of the mainstream religions to where I say now I am "none of the above" when asked what religion I prefer and I still have a strong belief in God. So one can be a crunchy con without political affiliation and without being Christian.
Thank you for writing the book.
