The Moslem atrocities in Iraq have surpassed all that the world has ever seen. We hear daily of human heads being found on Bagdhad's streets. A little boy's hands were nailed to a table "so that he keep quiet; a young girl's head was severed with a kitchen knife, and a pig's head sown in its place" (BBC). Dozens of fellow Moslems were set afire alifein recent times. Hundreds were decapitated, some on public T.V. Thousands of bodies were found in the city bearing marks of horrendous torture. What kind of religion is this, one might ask? What kind of people? These people do not honor their own mothers! They torture their own brothers and sisters and children! They blow up thousands of innocent Moslems with bombs studded with bearing steel balls. Obviously there are grave discrepancies between how Moslems see martyrdom, and how Christians see it. A Christian offers his life for the Kingdom of Peace of the Prince of Peace which is Christ. He never takes other innocent (or guilty) lives with him! He knows that God wouldn't accept it! A Moslem, however, offers his life for himself and for his perceived "jihad of Allah." He thinks that this guarantees him Paradise! He has no compunction to torture and to kill scores of innocent bystanders as part of his "offering." He assumes that bloodshed and atrocity towards his fellow Moslems "pleases Allah"! He is utterly mistaken, of course! How can we change Islam? I used to discuss this in my correspondence with the Iranian Representative to the UN, Dr. Zarif Jawad, years ago. He conceded that we differ on the meaning of martyrdom. But he pointed out that at the center of the problem is "our different perception of justice." Christian martyrs equate justice with rightness, but not necessarily in this life (or else they would also be killing every person they perceive as unjust, as do Moslems). Rather, they offer themselves to God as victims for justice - they offer their own lives. Moslems, though, insist that their way of martyrdom does justice, and that therefore it is the right way. The moral seems to be, Dr. Zawad and I agreed, that we must both work for justice more forcefully, in Palestine and elsewhere, and the tensions will thus get reduced and also our differences. After seeing the level of Muslim atrocity, I am no longer convinced that this is the case! Middle East is washed in innocent blood spilled by the Moslems! Before we speak of reconciliation and common ground, the Moslems need to take a deep breath, and repent, and expel from their ranks the many beastly members they now have! This ought to be their only jihad! Then we can talk brotherhood among Christians and Moslems!
